MECHAMATO SEASON 4 IS AMAZING!
Helloo, it's been a while guys~ I can't sleep so I want to yap about Mechamato!
I just recently finished binge watching mechamato season 4 on Netflix and it was so damn good!
This season unlike the previous ones, does not focus much on the 'bad' robots, instead what they focus more on is - the characters. Yes, the characterization, the relationships and interactions between each of them is just so precious. At some points, it makes me felt warm and even tearful especially when they highlighted on Amato's relationship with his parents. Gosh, they're such a green-coded, healthy family. (*cough*pleasenothinghappenstothisfamilythisisnotforeshadowingthelastepisodesisit*cough*)
SPOILERS AHEAD!
I like how even side characters in Mechamato have their own unique personalities; they feel even more alive in this season. For example, Bula, the nerd bully is not just a nerd who knows to instruct Billy from the side, but he's also good in football, a striker even?? and he also had a humble and positive attitude when they lost in episode 9, even commenting about how everything is in the past and they can change it, thus there's no need to ponder over it. He even made a truce with Amato, are you sure we're supposed to hate this guy? cause he's very likable even from the movie.
Then, we have Deep, who, as always with his silly antics. Some people found him annoying but I actually like his casual remarks and random jokes. This guy doesn't give a sh*t about what other people said and will do as he likes - he'll even eat his friends in desperation, and blow off the whistle as he likes if you let him become the referee. In this season, we also get to see two of his brothers and his non-existing younger sibling lol. He's silly, and I like him.
Pian in this season is still the rich guy, except he's more conscious of it now, commenting on stuff like "even I haven't lost control and I'm rich," to Amato in episode 1. I find it cool that even though Amato is the main character but he's not all goody two-shoes a.k.a. a totally nice person, he had his bad sides. Meanwhile, Pian is actually the kinder soul, more innocent, and always looking to the bright side. Throughout the four seasons, there were many times when Pian pointed out or stopped Amato from capturing the bad robots, as he realized that not all of them are actually evil and instead, they required some help. I find the slight contrast between him and Amato is intriguing, especially when in the first episode, Amato was shown to be doing bad things consciously.
We don't get to see Mara much this season, but that's fine cause she got plenty of highlights in the previous season. Oh, and she had a change in VA. I don't even recognize it at first though.
Amato in this season was amazing. He's not just a high-tech superhero with a powersphera sidekick, he's also a teenage boy, a son and most importantly just a human. I really like how this season feels more slice of life thingy than a battle shounen. It becomes more of a 'what is Amato doing today' episodes rather than 'what is Amato fighting today' episodes. I like fighting sequences, action is my favourite genre. But, somehow the writing in this season in terms of giving depth to the characters is so good, I really love this season much more just because of that. Season 3 was so packed of action and I love it but this season, even with just 10 episodes, just bring a different level of freshness to the series.
These two are so precious omo need to protect!
Lastly, I want to talk about the 'bad' robots. Episode 1 to 10 of this season seems to have a pattern where the so-called 'bad' robots are not actually bad, they're just either malfunctioned, have behavioral issues or misunderstood. Perhaps, Monsta is making it this way, so that it will make sense when Amato fights with the space prison later on. Because, if these robots are legitimately evil, then Amato will looks evil too, fighting with the organization that contains these robots. Surely, Monsta would not potrayed their MC in bad light, especially when children are watching the shows too. In fact, the space prison actually feels like a dumpster for unused or thrown robots by its masters.
I compiled a list of 'bad' robots based on categories:
1. Malfunctioned: Janitor*, Apayapi, Barberosak*
2. Behavioural issues (include also if their behaviour are derived by their functions/obsessions towards something) : Mechabot (he's here cause he's a prisoner too)*, Konchos, Amazeey, Janitor*, Ninjamera, Paintasso, Champbot (he's just arrogant), King Boxel*, Scarescrew, Arcadia, Plastico (mental issues)*, Jetsis & Carbro, Cloudiva (she has good heart, but very sensitive), Fulus & his grandpa, Toopee, Influenzo, Tokang Citra, Rocketfish (aggressive), Roborigami (mental issues?), Impostru, Hasoot, Washy Moshy,
3. Misunderstood: Mechabot (hide in the prison from grakakus), Sejuku, Bitbobeep(thrown away by master), Karok, Sumorai, Garamsey, King Boxel*, Rojack & Friend, Plastico*, Shleep (its's master is bad, but the robot not really), Mami Balut (PS, non-prisoner), Vendator & Gachu, Inkassa, Barberosak*, Bulbobot (PS, non-prisoner), Dooray&Doorby (non-prisoner), Fanbot
Unknown but doesn't do harm: Chamelia, Cabby, Dolly
Actual villains: Troket (tbf, he's just had a bad temper and Mechabot accidentally attacks him first), Switcho, Chachix, Quacky (not even a robot, where did this guy even come from and where did he go?)
Yea, so seeing from the list, most of these robots would do well if they have guidance from a good master. Seeing that they retained their behavioral issues just says something about how the space prison is simply a place to dump problematic robots. Plus, they also had an arena where they held a battle league between prisoners - it seems to me that they don't really try to fix these robots for good, and just let them run wild while being contained behind bars. The space prison is freaky, I called it.
